To the east it borders the Waldsee district, to the south, separated by Schwarzwaldstrasse, it borders Oberwiehre, and to the west it borders the old town. The Dreisam flows through the entire east-west stretch of the district.Oberau is served by tram line 1, which runs along Schwarzwaldstrasse. The nearest S-Bahn stop is in Wiehre on the Höllentalbahn, or alternatively there is a stop in Littenweiler.For cyclists, the FR 1 runs along the Dreisam, connecting Oberau with the western districts and in the east with the Sportpark Ost and the Dreisamtal. A cycle expressway to Kirchzarten is planned along Kartäuserstrasse. To the south, the FR 8 runs in the east towards Kappel and in the west through the Wiehre.
