With an area of 0.45 km², Carlstadt is the smallest district in Düsseldorf and borders the old town, the city center, Unterbilk and the Rhine.[2]The district's boundaries are the Rhine in the west, Kasernenstraße in the east and mainly Haroldstraße in the south. The northern border to the old town district is more complicated. The north-western area in particular does not currently correspond to the historical development, although "Rheinort" and "Alter Sicherungshafen", also called "Berger Hafen", were located in front of the city wall until the citadel was built. The border to the old town runs from Kasernenstraße across Wallstraße, turns into Mittelstraße to Carlsplatz. From there along Berger Straße to Hafenstraße, followed by Akademiestraße to Rheinstraße in front of the former Rheintor and from there across towards the banks of the Rhine (= Rheinort street) at the level of the Rhine. Actually, the historical southern border of the old town to Carlstadt was at Hafenstraße/Alter Sicherheitshafen.[3]Carlsplatz is open every working day as a daily market and restaurant.
