Berlin is both the largest city in Germany and its capital. Although mentioned by name as early as the 13th century, it is considered by some to be one of Europe's newer cities due to its rapid growth and industrialization in the mid-19th century. Much of the city was destroyed in WWII, but some examples of the beautiful architecture still stand. In recent history it has been known to have been divided and reunited.
